Lessons
In Montessori pedagogy, lessons are carefully prepared, individualised instructional moments designed to guide children in exploring specific concepts, skills, or materials within a prepared environment. Rather than following a fixed curriculum sequence, Montessori lessons respond to each child’s developmental needs, interests, and readiness, supporting autonomy and self-directed learning. Lessons typically involve a clear, purposeful demonstration by the educator, showing how to use a material or engage in an activity through hands-on, experiential learning. The educator then observes the child’s engagement and progress, offering follow-up lessons as needed to deepen understanding and support mastery. Designed to spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and support intellectual, emotional, and social development, Montessori lessons honour intrinsic motivation and allow children to learn at their own pace, fostering independence and a lifelong love of learning.
“These lessons, exact and fascinating, given in an intimate way to each child separately, are the teacher's offering to the depths of the child's soul.” (Montessori, Maria, The Absorbent Mind, p. 247)
