The Italians know how to design beautiful objects, and they also know how to celebrate Maria Montessori’s 150th birthday!  This 2 Euro coin was officially presented on 15 January 2020. Designed by Luciana De Simoni, it was minted in the mint of Rome.

Last year our colleagues in Italy lobbied successfully for this initiative to celebrate Maria Montessori in this auspicious year. 

The image chosen will be well known: it was taken in Vienna in 1930 by famous photographer Lotte Meitner-Graf. The design also refers to some of the mathematical materials.

This is the third time that Italy has honoured Maria Montessori by issuing special coins or banknotes.
